right now: the good and the bad -catherine van tatenhove

At this very moment somewhere in this world someone is riding an elephant in Thailand. The elephant swaying though the jungle in the heart of Chiang Mai heading towards the nearest water source where he baths after trekking through the sticky humid air. He then curls his rough tucks over his muscular body spewing water. Refreshing. The elephants master and friend, called a mahout, meticulously watching the elephant to keep him in check.
At this very moment somewhere in the world someone is starving in Thailand. Thrown into abject poverty because of uncontrollable elements in his life he's desperate. The pang of hunger hanging over him until it becomes too much, and he's forced to turn to his beloved family and confess he had no luck today. He sees them sitting on the dirt bug infested floor and wonders why the universe can be so cruel.

At this very moment somewhere in the world someone is celebrating their 5th birthday. She is sitting, waiting to sink her small teeth into her favorite cake while smiling ear to ear as her family snaps pictures desperate to capture the pivotal moment. She consumes her cake anticipating the new barbie concealed in the shiny pink paper. She has no concept of hardship yet. She is innocent and happy. And, her parents couldn't be more proud of their gorgeous growing girl.
At this very moment someone is crying. Today she is five. It's her birthday, but no one knows. Her family hasn't seen her since she couldn't even form coherent thought or words. She cries because she was told she was going to get a birthday gift from the nice man who lets her stay with him. But, when she inquired about her gift he looked at this helpless girl with a furrowed brow on his head and a beer in his hand, furious. This five year old girl didn't think bruises were presents, but I guess she was wrong.
